Dental Office COVID-19 Protections Have Worked, ADA Tells Administration

Representatives from the ADA told White House Office of Management and Budget officials last week that there is little risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 in dental offices.

ADA News: Representatives from the ADA told White House Office of Management and Budget officials last week that there is little risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 in dental offices. A follow-up letter from ADA President Daniel J. Klemmedson, D.D.S., M.D., and Executive Director Kathleen T. O'Loughlin, D.M.D., M.P.H., thanked the administration for the discussion and reiterated the point, outlining low infection rates seen in hygienists and dentists.

The ADA met with the administration to discuss the COVID-19 emergency temporary standard under review, and ADA officials noted that the ADA has provided substantial support to help practices mitigate risk, and existing protocols have proved effective.

"The data suggest that requiring substantial new infection controls – such as rerouting ventilation systems and making other capital improvements – will have little (if any) notable impact on dental office workers or the patients they serve," Drs. Klemmedson and O'Loughlin wrote.
