In an effort to assist our members with training new dental assistants, WSDA has compiled a list of videos that focus on the basics of dental assisting. With no formal training requirements in Washington state for dental assistants, there can be a wide variance in skill level among new hires. Many employer dentists decide to train their dental assistants on the job. As such, instructional videos can be a great tool to help complement in-person training. While WSDA understands that every practice is unique, it is our hope that some or all of these videos will meet your needs.

What Do the Training Videos Cover?

The training videos are organized into three phases, with each phase focusing on both technical and interpersonal skills.

The first phase is fundamentals of dentistry; covering dental terminology, operatory set up, identifying instruments, understanding HIPAA, and providing information on the different types of dental specialties. Assistants also learn the basics of customer service in a dental office.

The second phase is dental equipment basics. Assistants learn how to set up trays, pass instruments, use suction equipment, and take radiographs and photographs. Assistants also expand on their communication skills by learning how to deal with patient anxiety and fear.

The final phase examines why certain treatments are performed for different oral health conditions. Assistants also learn about culturally appropriate communication. The final phase also provides links to existing state dental rules and regulations.
